The Documents modules provides a very flexible way to organize and present documents of several types, including MS Word, PDF, html pages, and more.  You also have the option to display Author, Creation date, Modified by date, file size, and even more.  You can allow users to sort items as well.  These documents are accessible by the Core Search Module.
